STAKEHOLDERS CONSULTATIVE MEETING ON THE REVIEW OF ZANZIBAR EDUCATION ACT NO. 6 OF 1982

The Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC - Zanzibar) in collaboration with Zanzibar Law Reform Commission today, November 24, 2022, has conducted a one-day session to review the Education Law in Zanzibar.

The meeting is participated by more than 50 stakeholders from Government Ministries, the Law Reform Commission, Civil Society Actors and Private Sector.

The meeting is expected to come up with recommendations for a comprehensive education system in Zanzibar. The meeting aims at analysing the current Education Act and Education Policy in relation to the needs and current context for a comprehensive and diverse protection mechanism for protection of right to education.

THRDC continues to advocate for a Comprehensive education aiming at building a universal Culture of Human Rights promotion and protection. THRDC has reminded stakeholders to promote Human Rights Education fostering attitudes, behavior and practices to uphold human rights for all members of the Society.

An inclusive education in human rights from childhood, informally and formally not only provides Knowledge and protection mechanisms, but also imparts skills needed to promote, defend and apply rights in life.

Stakeholders were reminded to prioritize Human Rights Education as a basic subject at all levels of education from the very bottom (kindergarten). The benefits of teaching human rights education from very young age will contribute to building a societies that knows their rights, respects each other and protects the rights of others. This will also help reduce cruelty and violence against children.
