THRDC NEW YEAR 2026

Dear Members and Partners,
Warm greetings and best wishes for the New Year 2026 from the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC).
As we begin the year, we extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude for your continued partnership, solidarity, and support throughout 2025 in advancing human rights, democratic governance, and the rule of law in Tanzania. Your commitment has contributed meaningfully to sustaining a shared vision and a collective voice for peace, justice, and constitutional values.
The year 2025 tested the resilience of Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) in Tanzania. It unfolded within a complex national context marked by heightened challenges to civic space and fundamental freedoms. These challenges were sharply underscored during the 29 October General Elections, which were widely criticized by citizens,  HRDs, regional and international observers for failing to meet democratic standards and for taking place amid significant violence, an extended internet shutdown, and restrictions on political opposition, CSOs  and media freedom.
In the lead-up to and aftermath of the elections, credible reports from few civil society organizations and human rights organizations documented the excessive use of force by security agencies, including lethal force against peaceful protesters, arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, and restrictions on freedoms of expression and assembly. Demonstrations in major cities such as Dar es Salaam, Mbeya, Arusha and Mwanza triggered by the exclusion of key opposition figures, ongoing human rights violations and alleged electoral irregularities were met with curfews, military deployment, and reported casualties. These developments contributed to heightened fear and erosion of public trust in democratic processes. Despite these realities, THRDC continued to engage responsibly and constructively, seeking lawful and peaceful avenues to contribute to national consensus , reconciliation, social cohesion, and accountability.
Throughout 2025, THRDC remained committed to working collaboratively with a broad range of stakeholders, including state and non-state actors, to support the protection of Human Rights Defenders, promote access to justice, and encourage dialogue and national consensus grounded in respect for the Constitution and the rule of law. Particular attention was given to supporting emerging defenders, especially young people, whose participation reflects a growing civic consciousness and commitment to national values, and are the most targeted.
As we move into 2026, THRDC reaffirms its commitment to strategic collaboration with diverse stakeholders, including Government authorities, Diplomatic Missions, civil society organizations, and special groups such as youth, women, persons with disabilities, children, and community actors at all levels. Our priorities remain focused on strengthening the rule of law, safeguarding civic space, promoting freedom of expression through national consensus, and ensuring that Human Rights Defenders at risk are supported through lawful, coordinated, and effective protection mechanisms. We firmly believe that sustained dialogue, mutual respect, and partnership are essential to achieving these shared objectives.
Attached to this message is our January 2026 Newsletter, which highlights key reflections, milestones, and initiatives from the past year. We trust it will serve as a useful reference and an opportunity for continued engagement on the human rights agenda.
We would also like to inform our members and partners that the THRDC office is officially open for the year 2026. However, I am currently out of the office attending the Human Rights Advocates Program at the Institute for Human Rights Studies- Columbia University from January to April 2026. During this period, Ms. Halima Sonda, Director of Programs and Operations, will serve as Acting National Coordinator on my behalf. We kindly request you to extend to her and the entire senior management team the same cooperation and support you have consistently accorded to the Coalition. I will be available remotely only for issues that require my attention.
THRDC remains committed to constructive engagement, national stability, and the shared aspiration of a Tanzania where human rights, justice, and dignity are upheld for all. Above all, we remain guided by a simple but powerful principle: Defending Human Rights is not a Crime.
Please accept the assurances of our highest consideration, and once again, our best wishes for a peaceful and prosperous New Year.
Yours sincerely,
Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC)
