LAW ENFORCERS WORKSHOP ON SECURED AND PEACEFUL MANAGEMENT OF ELECTORAL AND DEMOCRATIC PROCESS

On the closing day, the Director for Criminal Investigations (DCI), Ramadhan Kingai, representing IGP Camillus Wambura, delivered closing remarks congratulating THRDC for organising this important program, acknowledging its timely relevance as Tanzania approaches the Local Government Authorities and General Election.

He urged human rights defenders and practitioners in Tanzania to take a proactive approach by continuing to provide education, as it is a valuable experience in addressing human rights violations before they occur. "The police in Tanzania also require skills and knowledge to protect human rights in our country, rather than solely focussing on building peace and security," he stated.

Furthermore, he stated that law enforcement lacks the ability to publicly address their allegations regarding human rights issues. He subsequently urged advocates for human rights to take immediate action on their behalf.

Ms. Hilda Oyella, Human Rights Adviser at the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office, United Nations, commended the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) and the police force for their effective organisation and involvement in the training, calling it a significant step forward in electoral management.

Ms. Oyella emphasised the importance of the Police continually enhancing inclusivity and accountability in their operations, ensuring that all groups are actively involved in the electoral process.

Adv. Onesmo Olengurumwa, National Coordinator for THRDC, stated that it is our commitment and aspiration to ensure that the Police in Tanzania uphold and safeguard our Constitution, Laws, and Human Rights throughout the Election Processes.

Through doing so, it will significantly contribute to a peaceful election that upholds human rights, the rule of law, and good governance, thereby reinforcing the President's public declarations to promote human rights in Tanzania through her 4R Philosophy. Furthermore, an initiative will also restore public trust in the police force by addressing their human rights challenges.
