On the 28th of April 2019, the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) commemorated its Sixth Human Rights Defenders (HRD) day ceremony in Dar es Salaam. This year’s event also marked THRDC’s Six years anniversary of Defending Human Rights Defenders in Tanzania.

The theme of the 6th Defenders day was “Claiming and Protecting Online Civic Space for Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in Tanzania”. If people can’t express themselves freely, other rights suffer more. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948, freedom of expression is the right of every individual to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers.

The 2019’s forum was designed to show case the achievements in protecting civic space and activities done online by our members, partners and stakeholders. As part of the celebrations, THRDC is also recognizing and awarding distinguished Human Rights Defenders who have showed dedication to promote and defend human rights through online platforms.
