ALL FOR APPLICATION OF BOARD MEMBERS

1.0 Introduction
 The Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) is a membership organization working towards enhancing the security and protection of Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) in the country. It is registered and operates within the framework of Non-Governmental Organizations Act (NGO Act) 2002. THRDC long-term goals are to see a free and secure environment for human rights defenders in Tanzania and to ensure HRDs in our country are able to carry out their essential work free from harm and repression, in accordance with the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders of 1998.

THRDC organizational structure comprises of General Assembly, Board of Directors, and Secretariat. Article 9 of the THRDC Constitution of 2012 provides for the establishment of the Board of Directors to be comprised of nine (9) members based on the THRDC’s stakeholders and thematic representation. According to the Constitution, the tenure for Board members is for a term of three (3) years subject to a renewal of two consecutive terms.
 
THRDC recognizes the paramount importance of having a Board that possesses a deep understanding of the organization's beliefs, values, mission, and vision. This understanding is crucial in ensuring that the Board effectively addresses key Coalition issues throughout the year while staying aligned with the core principles. In addition, THRDC firmly believes that in order to ensure the sustainability of its current performance in the NGO sector, the Board must devote significant time and strategic thoughts to the organization's long-term objectives. Thus, individuals who join THRDC's Board must demonstrate a genuine commitment, dedicating their time, energy, and unwavering effort to fulfil their responsibilities.
 
As the terms of our esteemed current Board members end, in accordance with the THRDC Constitution, we are enthusiastically searching for five (5) highly qualified individuals to join our team and fill these vacancies. We are actively seeking individuals who possess the requisite qualifications, expertise, and unwavering passion to make a significant contribution to the growth and impact of our Coalition.
 
2.0 Qualifications/Conditions
This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about THRDC’s mission and who has a track record of board leadership, therefore aspiring individuals must have the following qualifications.
 
i.          Applicants should be mature, analytical, tolerant and of high moral integrity.
ii.          Applicants must possess a minimum Degree level of education with specific field training and sound experience with management. Master’s and PhD levels will be an added advantage.
iii.          If the Applicant is from the member organization  of THRDC, must have fully paid all contributions and fees owed to THRDC.
iv.          If the Applicant belongs to a member organization of THRDC, they must have fulfilled all their obligations by fully paying all contributions and fees owed to THRDC.
v.           Applicants must have a background or be involved in any human rights work/ or a Human Rights Defender in a way.
vi.          Applicants must belong and apply to represent any of the following thematic groups, pastoralists, minority rights, people with disabilities, women, child rights, social rights and accountability, natural resources and economic rights, political rights and human rights in human rights in general, legal aid providers and freedom of expression.
vii.        For applicants working in an NGO, his/her NGO must have all audited financial documents for at least three years consecutively.
viii.        For applicants working in an NGO, his/her NGO must have complied with all laws and regulations governing the NGO sector since its existence.
 
3.0 Experience
i.          Applicants must have at least 5 years work experience in the field of human rights or a human rights defender.
ii.          Applicants must have at least 5 years of previous experience in NGO’s operation in Tanzania
iii.        Applicants must have a vast experience in NGO’s dynamics and regimes in Tanzania. 
 
4.0 Skills
i.          Pro-active person, self-motivated, positive attitude, strategic thinking and exceptional multi-tasking abilities.
ii.           Demonstrate a curious mindset and possess the capacity to make meaningful contributions to the development of the NGO.
iii.           Possess excellent communication skills and the ability to deliver compelling public presentations.
iv.           Exhibit a strong service-oriented approach, prioritizing the needs and goals of the Coalition and its beneficiaries.
v.            Excellent organizational and strong interpersonal skills.
vi.           Ability to engage in successful fundraising efforts, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Coalition.
 
5.0  Duties:
i.         To attend all scheduled Board meetings in accordance with the Coalition's calendar and provide valuable guidance for the strategic governance of the organization.
ii.         To actively participate in the formulation of policies as a crucial member of the Coalition's policymaking body.
iii.         To develop effective strategies for the financing and financial management of the Coalition.
iv.         To possess the authority to co-opt any individuals who possess specific expertise and are required for purposes.
v.         To appoint technical committees, assign clear terms of reference, and establish task forces to address specific objectives.
vi.         To Stay well-informed about the organization by thoroughly reviewing minutes from Board meetings, financial statements, and other relevant materials. Fulfil legal, fiscal, and ethical responsibilities with utmost dedication.
vii.         To be aware of and notice community activities and legal/political developments which may impact the organization and/or its programs and bring them to the attention of the Board.
viii.         To assume responsibility for the recruitment and disciplinary actions pertaining to the National Coordinator position
ix.         To approve and monitor the progress of major capital expenditures as defined in THRDC’s financial manual.
x.         To develop comprehensive strategies and mobilize resources to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Coalition.
xi.         To foster a culture of good working relationships and mutual respect at all times, actively encouraging cooperation and collaboration
xii.         To promote a positive and reputable image of the Coalition through consistent efforts and public representation.
xiii.         To uphold the highest standards of ethics and exemplary work performance, serving as a role model for others within the organization.
xiv.         To recognize and value the contributions of staff members on an ongoing basis, fostering an environment of appreciation and support.
xv.         To Attend the annual Board retreat and other orientation meetings, actively engaging in important organizational activities and discussions.
