JOURNALIST JOSEPH GANDYE FREED, HE IS TO REPORT TO THE POLICE STATION WHEN NEEDED

The police force in Iringa has released journalist Joseph Gandye, the Producer and Associate Head of Watetezi TV. He is supposed to report to the police station when needed.

According to Advocate Chance Luoga from the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) representing the journalist, he said that, he asked the office of the Regional Crime Officer (RCO) in Iringa region to provide enough time for Gandye to report to the station since the time issued increases unnecessary costs and to enable the journalist to return to his daily responsibilities.

“I have asked for my client to be given sufficient time and the police have accepted. They have said that they are releasing him and if he is needed they will notify me, his advocate. They have not issued any other conditions”; said Advocate Chance Luoga.

Luoga has stated that the police have not given a special time for the journalist to report at the police station instead they will let him know if he is needed through his advocate.

Joseph Gandye was arrested by the police force on 22nd August, 2019, for allegedly publishing false information online after reporting on a story about six suspects of theft, who claimed they were forced to commit sodomy against each other during their interrogation by police officers at Mafinga Police Station.
