JOURNALIST ERICK KABENDERA’S BAIL APPLICATION HAS BEEN ADJOURNED TO 5th AUGUST, 2019

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Today, 1st August, 2019, Kisutu Residential Court in Dar es Salaam has received Erick Kabendera’s bail application brought by the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) Advocates, Shilinde Swedy and Catherine Ringo before Judge Rwizile.

Erick Kabendera’s bail application was brought to court on 31st July, 2019. Erick was arrested on 29th July, 2019, by people who are alleged to be police officers in plain clothes, at his residence in Mbweni, Dar es Salaam.

Initially the prosecutor asked the court for time to counter the application suggesting 7th August, 2019, because he has another case tomorrow, 2nd August, 2019.

However, the applying advocates asked the court to ignore the prosecutor’s request for the accused, Erick Kabendera, has been under police custody for more than 3 days without bail or being brought to court.

The Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition’s advocates, Advocate Shilinde Swedy and Advocate Catherine Ringo, have succeeded to convince the honourable judge to set a nearer date for the hearing so that the accused can get his rights.

Therefore, the court has decided that the case will be heard on 5th August, 2019 at 13:00hrs.

Also THRDC Advocates are at the Immigration Department working on the possibility of the accused, Erick Kabendera, getting police bail.
