On 21st and 22nd November 2024 the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) will be conducting the workshop for human rights lawyers at Stella Maris hotel in Bagamoyo, coast region in Tanzania. The workshop comprises about 70 human rights lawyers from both Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar.
THRDC has a longstanding commitment towards building the capacity of human rights laywers on public interest litigations, freedom of expression and criminal justice. Since 2014 THRDC has been nurturing lawyers and convince them to develop interest in human rights related cases.

The workshop aims at refreshing minds of human rights lawyers, empower them with necessary skills, share experiences, best practices and knowledge that will strengthen their legal expertise in public interest litigation, management of cases related to freedom of expression and cases related to election and democratic processes in Tanzania. The workshop will provide an opportunity for lawyers to reflect on the state and the future of Public Interest Litigation in Tanzania. This will help to digest both practical and legal challenges in relation to management of PIL cases including cases related to freedom of expression in Tanzania comparing to other jurisdictions in the East Africa. Human rights lawyers play a central role in advancing PIL in Tanzania. Lawyers have been at the forefront in litigating cases concerning the public interest, conducting research and advocacy on human rights issues to ensure the country’s human rights advancement. The workshop will covers topics on the role of Lawyers in promoting freedom of expression in Tanzania also on election and democratic processes, drafting and litigating electoral disputes, laws and policies governing election processes, reviewing past freedom of expression litigated cases and cases to be litigated in future, challenges faced by human rights lawyers in PIL cases, making a comparative analysis from other jurisdictions in East Africa and lastly lawyers will discuss on the state and future of PIL in Tanzania.
