The Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) has signed a three-year grant agreement worth USD 1.4 mil Sweden. This partnership builds on a decade of collaboration between THRDC and Sweden. The primary objective of this three-year agreement is to capitalize on the achievements of the previous Strategic Plan (2018-2022) and further enhance the implementation of the new Strategic Plan (2023-2027).The main objective of this plan is to enhance working environment for Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) in Tanzania, focusing on three key areas:
1. Protection Support: This area of focus involves providing comprehensive support to HRDs, including legal and emergency support to HRDs, when they face potential risks during implementation of their activities; It also entails advocating for policies and laws that impact HRDs and Human Rights in general. Moreover, its seeks to facilitates opportunities for engagement and collaboration among HRDs and various Local and International Institutions, including governmental and non-governmental entities.
2. Capacity Building and Empowerment: A core aspect of this agreement involves enhancing the capacity and empowering HRDs, including both THRDC members and non-member organizations. The objective is to equip them with the necessary skills and resources to effectively carry out their Human Rights work while ensuring their protection . Additionally, it aims to strengthen the capacity of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in understanding their rights and responsibilities, including compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
3. THRDC's Institutional building and Sustainability: The agreement recognizes the importance of sustaining and enhancing the institutional performance of THRDC. Efforts will be made to improve the Coalition's overall functioning and long-term sustainability, enabling it to better serve the cause of Human Rights in Tanzania.
The implementation of this funding agreement commenced on June 2, 2023, and will continue until December 31, 2026. The primary beneficiaries of this collaboration are HRDs in Tanzania, including both THRDC members and non-members across the Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.
THRDC is grateful for this continuous and generous support to the work of HRDS in Tanzania. We look forward to see an improved working environment for promotion and protection of Human Rights across Tanzania.
