Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Network (THRDC) would like to congratulate Hon. Lady Justice Imani Daud Aboud on her outstanding election as president of the African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR). Justice Imani Aboud has been announced yesterday, Monday, May 31, 2021, with her deputy Justice Blaise Tchikaya from the Republic of Congo. The election of Justice Imani Aboud has shown the continuation of great faith from the African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights in our country of Tanzania.

The position that Justice Imani Aboud has been elected is one of the most reputable post. It is our expectation as human rights defenders that Justice Imani Aboud will continue to oversee the administration of justice at the judicial level. Similarly, we hope that Justuce Imani Aboud will encourage our country of Tanzania to re-consider its decision of withdrawing from a declaration that allows citizens and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to file a case in that court.

THRDC believes that with the encouragement and inspiration of Judge Imani Aboud and the goodwill shown by Hon. President Samia Suluhu Hassan on re-considering Tanzania’s decision to withdraw from the declaration, CSOs and all Tanzanians will be able to regain their rights by being allowed to approach the court directly without any restrictions.

The Coalition would like to congratulate all the elected leaders of the African Court of Human and People’s Rights and wish them well in their role of defending and protecting human rights.
